1. Fundamentals We start this section by finding our bearings in order to better understand how technical documents, an integral part of information in general, have evolved. We introduce our subject with a protohistory of the technical document, its beginnings – (almost) in the dawn of time – in the 1930s, when modern documentation was launched, to discover a variety of definitions and an even greater variety of document types, and to see how their processing has evolved, necessary to understanding current developments in this area.
