Même si l'avancée considérable de chaque domaine de savoir contraint tout chercheur à ne pouvoir maîtriser vraiment qu'une partie du champ théorique de sa propre discipline, on peut et on doit aujourd'hui combler le manque d'une théorisation adéquate de l'interdisciplinarité, dont le mot d'ordre actuel continuera sinon de se heurter à tous les prétextes de refus, par-delà les raisons pratiques objectives de l'enterrer. Or l'encyclopédisme, tel du moins qu'on peut le refonder aujourd'hui à la suite du philosophe français Gilbert Simondon et par-delà les Lumières, possède à cet égard une vertu majeure : il pratique l'interdisciplinarité par le biais d'une unification philosophique des sciences, tout en offrant les premiers éléments d'une nouvelle et véritable théorisation de l'interdisciplinarité dans ses fondements, et donc dans ce qui peut la justifier. Encyclopaedism and the theory of interdisciplinarity Although the considerable advances being made in every field of knowledge are forcing researchers into a position where they can master only a limited part of the theoretical field of their own discipline, there is an imperative need today to remedy the lack of an appropriate theory of interdisciplinarity, failing which the watchword will continue to be rejected on all kinds of pretexts, over and beyond any practical and objective reasons for burying the idea. Encyclopaedism, at least as it might be reinvented today, following the ideas of the French philosopher Gilbert Simondon and moving beyond the Enlightenment, has a major advantage in this respect : it puts interdisciplinarity into practice through the philosophical unification of the sciences, while also providing the groundwork for a new and workable theory of the foundations of interdisciplinarity, and therefore of how it can be justified.
