The Specter of the Death of the Author The announcement of an author's death is a recurrent theme in literature and literary criticism. Such announcements can be studied in the work of Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Claire Parnet and Antoine Compagnon in terms of the failure of prophecy and the manifestos of self-dissolution within the framework of institutional analysis.
