Maria Rozanova, Icon: canon and portrait.
For old Russia, the canon was not a constraint, but the condition of life itself, and specifically that of the icon art. The canonical schemes were called "podlinnik" ("original") and the faithful reproduction of the model explains the popular piety towards the first of holy images, the icon of Savior Acheiropoielos (made by a non human hand). The coexistence of the canon and reality was natural. The inspiration of the iconograph was derived from relics, so that the Russian medieval art is characterized by what can be called "metaphysical realism". Source : Éditeur (via Persée) |
