The author makes an appraisal of geographical research carried out in France during the last 30 years or so, relating to tourism and leisure in the rural environment. This assessment makes it possible to isolate the main themes referred to and to observe their evolution. The following are analysed along with the main bibliographical references ; town-country relations, the economic and social impact of rural tourism, it's role in the development of the countryside and it's relations with the natural environment.
