La montée de la Chine a suscité d'innombrables articles et livres en Occident, qui reflètent l'inquiétude aussi bien que l'admiration, et parfois même le désir d'approfondir notre compréhension pour ce géant oriental qui se redresse. Cet article propose un survol d'efforts symptomatiques d'intégrer la Chine dans notre perception – celle de l'Occident – du monde du XXIe siècle. On y trouve des sceptiques, qui mettent l'accent sur les dangers d'un système de valeurs étranger à nous, ainsi que sur l'instabilité du système politique et social ; d'autres positions reflètent plus de confiance dans la capacité d'adaptation et d'évolution des élites et structures chinoises – et l'étendue des interprétations divergentes est particulièrement grande dans ce cas. Enfin, un des défis les plus excitants est une comparaison entre l'Est et l'Ouest dans le long terme, ce que Ian Morris a entrepris ; sa contribution mérite une attention spécifique. The rise of China has triggered uncounted articles and books, in ‘the West, reflecting fear as well as admiration, and some even the desire to deepen our knowledge of the reviving giant of the East. The following article presents a selected survey of symptomatic attempts to integrate the new China in our, European or Western, perception of the world of the twenty first century. Some are sceptical and emphasize the dangers of a strange system of values and an unstable political and social system; others are more confident and trust in the capacity of adaptation and evolution of the Chinese elites and structures—the range of divergent interpretations is particularly wide, in this case. Finally, one of the most exciting intellectual challenges is a long-term comparison between ‘East' and ‘West', as Ian Morris tries to work out; his contribution deserves specific attention.
