En s'appuyant sur les écrits d'Édouard Glissant, et sur sa « poétique de la Relation », cet article postule que la corporalité du personnage créole, constituant le cœur même de la signification de l'œuvre théâtrale Drums and Colours de Derek Walcott, participe de la construction d'un espace à la fois discursif et esthétique à partir des données de la colonisation : c'est dans un tel espace que sont constitués le lien et la relation de l'être caribéen avec l'Autre. Par ailleurs, la construction de l'espace chez Walcott suppose une confrontation avec les inscriptions mnésiques liées à la disparation ontologique des corps dans le « gouffre » de la Traite transatlantique mais aussi, à terme, une sublimation de cette mémoire par la revendication d'une esthétique de la Relation, résultante de cette fréquentation du Gouffre. With the aid of Glissant's theoretical writings on the “poetics of Relation,” I argue that the corporeality of the Caribbean Creole, which I view as the heart of signification in the play Drums and Colours, is, for Derek Walcott, essential in the construction of a discursive and esthetic Caribbean space and that, in Walcott's vision, it is through the construction of such a space that the Caribbean subject can establish relation with his former coloniser, his Other. Furthermore, the construction of such a space in Walcott's theatrical poetics involves an exploration of the psychic inscriptions caused by the ontological disappearance of the body in the “abyss” of the Middle Passage but also, ultimately, a sublimation of these memories and imprints into an aesthetic of Relation, a result of the knowledge of the experience of the “abyss” survived and remembered.
