Villagers and the Law in Early Modern England
This essay survey some of the recent scholarship on the law, looking at the major issues raised from the perspective of the relation between the villagers of early modern England and the legal system. Villagers came into contact with three main types of law in this period : land and property law, criminal law and laws of social regulation. The most important feature of the law was its flexibility. But the use of the law changes in response to other social transformations. The relations between villagers and the law clearly demonstrate the changes in English society in the early modern period.
