Résumé anglais Communal property in the Briangon area during the 18th and 19th centuries The Briançon area in the Alps managed to keep 80% of its land as property of the communes, whereas, everywhere else in France during the 18th and 19th centuries, the collective use of land declined or vanished. This resistance apparently had to do with : the strong cohesion of rural communities made up of small landowners ; the latter's attachment to using land collectively for their herds ; widespread literacy ; and an openness toward the outside world, which has made communities dynamic and apt to defend themselves.
