L'État islamique (EI) est apparu en Irak en 2006, émanation de la mouvance d'Al-Qaïda. Sur fond de mise en marge des sunnites après le renversement de Saddam Hussein, l'organisation salafiste-djihadiste s'est employée à restaurer le califat par tous les moyens. Depuis 2014, une triple conquête militaire, territoriale et politique est à l'œuvre, bénéficiant du contexte de guerre civile en Syrie, de même que de la déstabilisation plus large du Moyen-Orient. À force de violents combats et de coups d'éclat, l'EI est parvenu à s'arroger le contrôle de provinces entières dans les deux pays, tenant à la fois tête aux régimes en place et aux autres factions de l'opposition. Les djihadistes restent déterminés à prendre le contrôle du monde arabe et musulman dans son ensemble, même au prix d'un bain de sang. The Islamic State (IS) appeared in Iraq in 2006, an offshoot of the Al-Qaeda movement. Against the backdrop of marginalisation of the Sunnis following the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, the salafist-jihadist organisation has worked to restore the caliphate by all means. Since 2014, it is a threefold conquest that is at work, military, territorial and political, and that has benefited from the context of civil war in Syria, as well as the wider destabilisation of the Middle East. By dint of heavy fighting and stunning blows, IS has been able to wield control over entire provinces in both countries, simultaneously confronting the regimes in power and other opposition factions. The jihadists remain determined to expand their grip on the Arab and Muslim world as a whole.
