Située dans la banlieue de Lyon, la commune de Villeurbanne fait de la valorisation de son patrimoine industriel l'élément clé d'une stratégie de distinction locale. La notion de mémoire est au cœur des politiques publiques de la ville, dont la part ouvrière et migratoire ferait la spécificité de son identité collective. Cette appartenance locale, c'est par la participation des habitants que la municipalité entend la légitimer. Ceux-ci sont en effet invités à contribuer activement à l'écriture du roman historique de la ville. Dans cet article, nous nous intéressons en particulier à la mise en récit de pans occultés du passé local, voire tabous, tels que l'accueil et les conditions de vie des populations étrangères. La question migratoire suscitant des tensions et des controverses au niveau national, nous pouvons nous demander dans quelle mesure cette participation mémorielle institutionnalisée tolère le conflit et rend possible la subversion. Participatory storytelling of local migration past: the challenge of a shared memory, between urban project and political mobilization. Located in the suburbs of Lyon, the city of Villeurbanne highlights its industrial heritage as the key element of a local distinction strategy. The notion of memory is at the core of its public policies with a special interest for its workers and immigrants' past, displaying thereby the specificity of its collective identity. The local council seeks the legitimacy for this local affiliation through the participation of its inhabitants. Indeed, they are invited to play an active part in writing the history of the city. In this article, we are especially interested in the narratives erased from the local past – that could almost be seen as taboo – such as the arrival and the living conditions of immigrants. Since the issue of immigration still represents a boiling debate in France, we can ask ourselves to what extent this institutionalized participation to the writing of the local history actually tolerates conflict and allows subversion.
