| Résumé anglais | VIEWS ON THE NAME AND THE SIGNATURE IN JAPAN In Japan, the institution of the name faltered in the years 1870-1871, when the Meiji government established a civil decree imposing on everyone individual surnames and first names. In order to measure the consequences of this reform, we will describe the situation that pertained in the Edo era : a plethora of names for some, and a distinct lack for others. | |
