Controversée, la mémoire de la Première Guerre mondiale change au début des années 2000, quand il devient question d'une victoire oubliée. L'époque récente (années 90 - 2000) est marquée par la « Shot at Dawn Campaign » autour du débat sur la réhabilitation des fusillés. Pour 2014, le gouvernement britannique a prévu un programme commémoratif doté de moyens importants, qui a cependant rencontré le feu des critiques. After much debate, the public memory of World War I started to change at the beginning of the 21st century; the fact that the allies won has now been largely forgotten. Recently, (from 1990-2000), “The Shot at Dawn” campaign has brought about the rehabilitation of the executed. The British government is financing a serie of events in 2014 to commemorate key moments in the conflict, but not without a barrage of criticisms from all sides. Nevertheless, the Imperial War Museum (IWM), reference point of British military history, re-opened in Autumn 2014, with many displays completely overhauled and brought up to date.
