More precisely, it examines the social consequences of the state's lack of investment in the housing sector. Does the evolution of property legislation call state domination into question? How much influence does the mobilisation of property legislation have in terms of the accession to material benefits? A detailed study of the pilot rehabilitation project which the historic area of Jianyeli is undergoing makes it possible to understand the role played by modern conveniences in the displacement of urban residents in Shanghai.
