Quel rôle joue l'imitation dans la culture et quelle est son importance pour le savoir anthropologique ? Ce texte souligne quelques voies d'approche possibles. L'imitation peut être envisagée comme une stratégie parodique, une compétence cognitive, un moyen de transmission culturelle, un principe de l'apprentissage social ou un mécanisme d'adaptation. Les processus d'imitation impliquent des compétences cognitives spécifiques et s'inscrivent dans des contextes sociaux et culturels déterminés. Parce qu'ils se situent à la charnière des sphères du biologique et du culturel, ces processus font partie du projet anthropologique qui cherche à comprendre à la fois l'unité cognitive de l'homme et la diversité de ses réalisations culturelles. Imitation and anthropologyWhat is the role played by imitation in culture and what, therefore, is its importance for anthropology ? This paper examines a number of possible approaches. Imitation could be envisaged as an ironic strategy, as a form of cognitive competence, as a means of cultural transmission, as an aspect of social learning or as an adaptive mechanism. The processes of imitation require specific cognitive capacities but are embedded in social and cultural contexts. Located at the interface of the biological and the cultural, the study of imitation is inscribed within the wider anthropological project of understanding at the same time the cognitive unity of humankind and the diversity of cultural phenomena.
