Partant de la singulière imbrication entre politique et religieux produite en Sicile par les formes de mobilisation et de lutte antimafia à partir des années 1980, la fabrication des « martyrs de la mafia » est ici analysée selon deux axes : la naissance et l'essor d'un dispositif cultuel à Palerme au moment de l'attentat mafieux au cours duquel le juge Giovanni Falcone trouva la mort (23 mai 1992), et l'institutionnalisation d'une nouvelle figure de « martyr », à travers les procès de canonisation actuellement en cours pour un juge (Rosario Livatino) et un prêtre (père Giuseppe Puglisi) assassinés par Cosa Nostra. Les controverses qui animent le monde catholique, l'univers judiciaire et les militants du mouvement Antimafia mettent à nu les apories de la construction de cette catégorie religieuse où le politique est non seulement une instance de légitimation, mais aussi, pour ses liens structurels avec la mafia, une cible critique. Victims, heroes or martyrs ? The anti-mafia judges The paper examines the creation of the notion of “martyrs of the mafia” within the context of the peculiar intertwining of politics and religion in Sicily manifest in the mobilization of the fight against the mafia, starting in the 1980'. This occurred in particular at the time when the mafia killed judge Giovanni Falcone on the 23rd of May 1992 and in the evocation of a new kind of “martyr” being created in the still running canonization process for a judge, Rosario Livatino, and a priest, father Giuseppe Puglisi, both killed by Cosa Nostra. The controversies within the catholic community, the legal world and the Antimafia movement reveal the fundamental assumptions that lie behind this religious categorization where the political has not only legitimizing effects but also is made subject to criticism because of its structural links with the mafia.
