This article explores the politics of Melville's use of Shakespeare in Typee and Omoo. It argues that the Polynesian islands are textual and intertextual spaces and shows that allusions to Shakespeare bring about a “redistribution of the sensible” (Jacques Rancière) which exposes colonisation as a fraud.
