C'est dans un contexte général de revalorisation de l'entreprise mais aussi des sciences humaines que l'on peut situer l'essor de l'histoire d'entreprise. Cette dernière puise ses éléments fondateurs dans la Business et la Public History américaines. L'évolution de cette pratique originale repose ainsi sur deux conceptions bien distinctes et parfois duelles de l'histoire d'entreprise étant comprise comme un sous-champ de l'histoire économique et l'autre tendant à confondre l'histoire avec une sorte d'outil managérial à visées volontiers plus pragmatiques et instrumentales. L'histoire de l'histoire d'entreprise pourrait se définir en fonction d'un oscillement singulier et permanent entre ces deux conceptions et qui s'est arrêté soit par un compromis, soit par une rupture radicale. Cette histoire est également marquée par les fluctuations dans le temps de deux de ses éléments structurants et constitutifs : l'offre et la demande d'histoire. The rise in the history if businesses can be situated within a general context which seeks to reassign values to business and also to human sciences. The founding elements in this history can be found in American Business and Public History. The development of this original practice is therefore based on two very basic and sometimes two-sided concepts of business history. Business history is thus viewed firstly as being a sub-section of economic history. The other tendency confuses this history with a sort of managerial tool voluntarily destined to be something rather more pragmatic and instrumental. The story of the history of business could therefore be defined according to a kind of strange and permanent oscillation between these two concepts, which has been halted either by a compromise or by a radical break.
