À partir des différentes significations du mot hébreu shoah, l'article explore l'importance qu'a pu avoir la destruction des Juifs d'Europe dans la pensée de Lévi-Strauss. Deux niveaux sont repérés auxquels Lévi-Strauss pose le problème de la catastrophe : le premier, plus explicite, assimile l'humanité entière à ceux qui ont payé le prix le plus important pour la construction de la société occidentale moderne : les Indiens d'Amérique. L'autre niveau fait un avec la méthode structurale. En particulier, l'article attire l'attention sur l'attitude critique de Lévi-Strauss, d'une part vis-à-vis du relativisme culturel, d'autre part vis-à-vis d'une certaine rigidité affectant d'autres sciences humaines, et notamment ces savoirs critiques (ou de la crise) que sont la psychanalyse et le marxisme. Cela permet de comprendre mieux dans quel sens sa subjectivité créatrice se déploie par rapport à la catastrophe, tout en s'identifiant avec le dispositif méthodologique qu'il a mis en place. Starting from the various meanings of the Hebrew word ‘shoah', the article investigates the role the destruction of the Jews in Europe had in the thought of Lévi-Strauss. Two levels have been found in the way Lévi-Strauss raises the problem of the catastrophe : the first one, which is more explicit, assimilates the whole humanity to those who paid everywhere the most important price in building modern western society, Native Americans. The other level is one with the structural method. In particular, the article focuses on the critical attitude of Lévi-Strauss, towards both cultural relativism and some rigidity affecting other human sciences, in particular psychoanalysis and marxism. The paper aims at clarifying in which way the creative subjectivity of Lévi-Strauss spreads with regard to the catastrophe while identifying with the methodological apparatus which he elaborated.
