L'« Invention » des Pomaks, ce groupe de musulmans bulgarophones des Rhodopes, s'est faite progressivement au cours du XIXe siècle. L'auteur avance que les observateurs occidentaux ont joué un rôle de premier plan dans la découverte et la description de leurs us et coutumes la polémique du Veda slave dans les années 1860-1870 a largement contribué à projeter les Pomaks sur la scène scientifique, avant que l'historiographie nationale bulgare ne les intègre définitivement. Inventing the Pomaks was a century-long process which began in the early 1800's. For the author, the discovering and the ethnographic description of this group of Bulgarian-speaking Muslims from the Rhodops effectively began with Western observers; the polemics over the Slavonic Veda in the 1860's and 1870's largely contributed to giving the Pomaks a scientific status, after what the Bulgarian national historiography finally integrate them.
