The paper analyzes the operations and procedures the novel of Rivera put into practice to rework and update a series of topics or commonplaces in historiography and literature used to account for the figure of Juan Manuel de Rosas. The fictional recreation of his voice leads to focus on the point of encounter between the narrative forms and a singular conception of history, which brings about a double movement: on the one hand, the history is placed again in a literary context and, on the other, the fictional soliloquy becomes a metaphorical history in which the figure of Rosas permanently refers to other texts and contexts of the future and the past.
