Au cours du XVIIIe siècle, particulièrement entre 1750 et 1800, les hommes des Lumières sont confrontés à un soudain afflux d'informations qu'ils cherchent à maîtriser grâce à l'invention de nouvelles technologies de papier. Cet article se penche sur la genèse de ces nouveaux instruments pour centraliser, classer et extraire les informations, qui ont été développés simultanément dans les administrations et les milieux savants. In the 18th century – especially from 1750 to 1800 – men of the Enlightenment were faced with a sudden influx of information that they tried to master with the help of newly invented paper technologies. This article explores the emergence of these new instruments for centralizing, sorting, and extracting information, which developed simultaneously in administration and learned circles. Although index cards systems had already made their appearance, practices were relatively slow to change due to a steadfast attachment to bound volumes as the primary support for inscription.
