On the Run : Fugitive Life in an American City d'Alice Goffman a connu un franc succès aux États-Unis avant de susciter une polémique quant à la véracité des propos de l'ethnographe et la légitimité de la méthode ethnographique. L'article propose de dépasser ce procès d'intention en interrogeant la portée sociologique de l'ouvrage. Il s'agira de restituer la controverse avant de montrer comment On the Run est rendu perméable à la critique par une survalorisation des effets sociaux du système pénal et un manque objectivation des conditions d'enquête. Alice Goffman's On the Run : Fugitive Life in an American City was a great success in the United States until a controversy arose around the truthfulness of the author's accounts and the legitimacy of the ethnographic method itself. This article aims to move beyond this trial of intention by examining the book's sociological contributions. It gives an account of the controversy and proceeds to show how On the Run was left vulnerable to critique due to an overemphasis of the social effects of the penal system and a lack of reflexivity in Goffman's analysis.
