Dans le monde académique, le doctorat est en général considéré comme le diplôme de plus haut rang. Le parcours de recherche initié par le ou la doctorant-e conduit à la rédaction d'une thèse et à une soutenance devant un jury constitué de docteurs le plus souvent habilités à diriger des recherches. Dans la pratique, ce modèle canonique hérité du Moyen Âge connaît des variations importantes en fonction des disciplines. C'est dans ce contexte de grande hétérogénéité et diversité que le doctorat connaît de nouvelles variations, notamment en Europe depuis la mise en œuvre du processus de construction de l'espace européen de l'enseignement supérieur. Le doctorat de création ou en création et le doctorat basé sur la pratique en sont deux exemples. Dans cet article, nous étudierons particulièrement le cas du doctorat en « arts et sciences de l'art » de l'université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne qui fut l'un des premiers en France (et dans le monde) à être habilité dans le domaine de la recherche en création contemporaine. The changing environment of doctoral research in the arts In the academic world, the doctorate is generally considered to be the highest ranking diploma. A doctoral student taking up a line of research produce a thesis that will be presented to a jury of PhD holders who are usually accredited research directors. In practice, this ancient model inherited from Mediaeval times has come to vary considerably in different disciplines. In an already heterogeneous and diverse context, doctoral studies are now seeing further changes, especially in Europe with the process of building up a European sphere of higher education. Two examples of this are the doctorate in creative arts and the doctorate based on arts practice. In this article, we focus in particular on the doctorate in “arts and arts sciences” offered by the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne, which was one of the first in France (and worldwide) to receive accreditation in the field of research on contemporary creative arts.
