The public action of Local Authorities is faced with new challenges especially in the economic and social spheres as pointed out in the first part of the article. The paper then focuses on a presentation of the Grenoble experience of a new geography of power as illustrated by the setting up of a structure that is new and original, the Council for the Development of the Greater Grenoble Area, and outlines the first lessons to be drawn from this experiment.
