The decline of the spanish colonial empire on the American continent chronologically overlapped with the passage towards a new century. During this transition period, the press –already strengthened as a means of information and entertainment – retrospectively conveyed and interpreted the stereotypes that had been generated throughout four centuries of hispanic hold dominion over the new continent. The late 19th century drawings, graphics and satirical cartoons became the mediums for a rich and varied iconography which conjured up the idealized evocations of an exotic world, the shock of different cultures and the outcome of the colonisation altogether. Nowadays, this large pictural production allows us to reach to a relecture of the past events by diciphering all the coded attributes, symbols and metaphors displayed in those illustrations.
