This article seeks to analyse the Jose Basílio da Gama's poem, O Uraguai, focusing on its aesthetic and social representations, related at the historical context of its production and circularity, in the confluences between arcadian school and the European illustration in the late eighteenth century. Specifically, the aim is to analyze the Amerindian representations present in the poem and the dialogues with other Brazilian poets of the same school, asking to what extent they would have created in the your poetry some specific tonalities, at the treatment they gave to Portuguese America. Analyze how the representations of the natives and the homeland land issue would be linked to the double sociocultural condition of poets : borns and raised in colonial Brazil and integrated at the illustrated and European neoclassical thought.
