Travail d'une équipe internationale de 27 auteurs, dirigée par G. Alberigo, l'Histoire du concile Vatican II en cinq tomes (1997-2005) réussit à rendre compte de ce qui fut un événement spirituel, par la méthode la plus historienne : celle d'une « histoire globale », conjuguant l'analyse des mentalités et du phénomène d'assemblée, avec ses procédures, ses intrigues et l'élargissement de l'horizon de ses membres.Le peu de recours aux Acta Synodalia trahit le privilège accordé à la catégorie d'événement, au détriment de la restitution de la genèse des textes. Cette dernière aurait pu invalider l'appel bien faible à « l'esprit du concile », dissiper des malentendus répandus dans la réception : ainsi LG n'a pas adopté le concept d'Ursakrament ni porté de jugement de foi sur la valeur des ordinations protestantes. Bien des controverses post-conciliaires en auraient été éclairées : le sens de subsistit in (LG 8), ou de in quibus et ex quibus (LG 23). Ce choix historiographique reconduit aussi l'énigme d'un concile de réforme de l'Église, ne se souciant pas du droit canon. A few Ecclesiological reflections on G. Alberigo's Histoire du concile Vatican IIThe work of an international team of 27 authors directed by G. Alberigo, the Histoire du concile Vatican II, in five volumes (1997-2005), succeeds in taking stock of what was a spiritual event by the most historical of methods: that of “global history”, combining analysis of mentalities with the phenomenon of assembly, with all its procedures, its intrigues and the expansion of its members' horizons.Sparseness of recourse to the Acta Synodalia betrays the privilege accorded the category of event, this to the detriment of the reconstruction of the genesis of the texts. The latter could have demolished the lame appeal to the « spirit of the council » and dissipate misunderstandings spread in its reception: LG did not adopt the concept of Ursakrament, nor did it pass a judgment of faith upon the value of Protestant ordinations. More than a few post-conciliar controversies would have been clarified: the meaning of subsistit in (LG 8), or of in quibus et ex quibus (LG 23). This historiographic choice also extends the enigma of a council of reform of the Church, unconcerned with canon law.
