De 1871 au tournant des années 1930, l'ambassade de France à Berlin hébergea successivement les représentants du vaincu chez son vainqueur, puis du vainqueur chez son vaincu. Ces hommes furent immergés dans un environnement marqué par le poids des affrontements et des rancœurs réciproques. Ils trouvèrent dans la capitale du Reich un terrain où le rappel d'une histoire douloureuse, la difficulté du dialogue, la confrontation avec la population berlinoise, pesaient sur la mise en œuvre de leurs missions comme sur le quotidien de leur vie personnelle. Inaugurant l'ère d'une diplomatie en terrain hostile, leur expérience éclaire tant la relation franco-allemande que la pratique du métier de diplomate dans cette période troublée. Facing Berlin. The French Embassy in Germany as an Experience of Residence Diplomacy on Hostile Ground (1871-1933)
The French diplomats sent to serve at the Berlin Embassy between 1871 and 1930 experienced a very singular kind of residence diplomacy. Representing France, successively as a defeated and then a victorious power, in a country that had been perceived in the previous sixty years as its main enemy, they had to face the resentment, the hostility and the anger of the German authorities, as well as of the Berlin bourgeoisie and of the rest of the Berliners. Their practice of diplomacy was challenged on a daily basis by obstacles resulting from this hostile background; their way of coping with difficulties in both their professional and their personal life sheds light non only on the French-German relationship, but also on what it meant to be a diplomat in those troubled times.
