The effect of data-processing systems on the translating process — whether as aids to translators or as automata requiring substantial help from humans — must be taken into account by whoever purports to train translators. The article analyses the various functions of data processors within and around the translating process and offers guidelines for the development of translator-training programs geared to the new technological, pratical, and intellectual requirements of the emerging « computer-invaded market ».
