The paper presents a historical survey of research in Machine (Aided) Translation. The five decades are described, 1945-1955, the first steps ; 1955-1965, from enthusiasm to disillusionment ; 1965-1975 the « quiet period » ; 1975-1985 the revival ; 1985-1995 matureness. All through the paper are recurrently addressed general topics such as the image of MT, the factors of MT demand, the architectures of eystems, the relations between MT and linguistics, the progressive integration of the computer into translation activity, the diversification of computer tools (from fully automated translation to machine-aided human translation)...
