Résumé anglais |
The Amanab of western Sepik have long practised a form of possession through mediums: the specialised mediums fall into a trance, following a successful hunting expedition, or during ceremonies. They are considered as the passive receptacles of the woodland gods who, through the mouths of these mediums, talk directly to the community. The gods are supposed to come looking for a recompense for the game given to the men, and promise other animals. So that the 'possession' is the realisation of the tacit "hunting contract" between men and gods. The mediums also intervene in diagnosing illnesses. Description of the symptoms and analysis of their cultural meaning. Source : Éditeur (via Persée) |
