Résumé anglais Taking advantage of an official ten day cruise (August 1974) in the archipelago of the Tonga Islands (eastern Polynesia), the rules of behaviour of the present-day Tongan society are observed. These are then compared to certain traditional ceremonies dating from the period of the discovery. The author suggests that the presence of the sovereign and his entourage during the annual ceremony (Agriculture Show) is, as regards etiquette, the focal point of the whole event, and shows the importance of the attitudes formalised in the etiquettes, as in the offering of gifts, and how they have persisted in the only Oceanian kingdom which still exists.
