Deux questions se croisent dans ce commentaire. Les dieux grecs sont-ils des puissances dépourvues d'unité ontologique ? Est-il saugrenu d'envisager que des divinités dont la présence est attestée très tôt sur les bords de l'Egée, puissent, à l'époque de la cité, se présenter comme des puissances, mais dissimuler un être substantiel venu du fond des âges ? Les mythes divins sont-ils uniquement de l'ordre du discours ? Ne pourrait-on admettre qu'un récit puisse mêler, à l'insu ou au su de ses locuteurs, l'exprimable et l'indicible, le pouvoir représentatif des mots adressés à tous et le pouvoir révélateur des choses données à voir à chacun, un discours sur le divin et une théologie du signe ? Symbol theology in Greece : the Homeric hymn to Hermes (I) : commentary on I. 1-181 Two interrelated questions constantly crop up throughout this commentary. Must we consider the Greek gods as powers existing only within the network of relations uniting them to the divine system as a whole ? It is absurd to imagine that the divinities whose presence was attested on the Aegean shore very early on, could in the Greece of city-states manifest themselves as powers and yet conceal a substantial being coming from the depths of time ? Do divine myths belong exclusively to the order of discourse ? It is not possible to imagine that a mythical story could intermingle unbeknown or known to its narrators, the expressible and the inexpressible, the representative power of words addressed to everyone and the revealing power of things given to be seen by all, a discourse on the divine and a symbol theology ?
