Résumé anglais The fœtus and the gods in the asiatic Ancient Near East : beginnings of the epigenesis theory The Ancient Near East conceptions about the fœtus were never given a synthetic explanation. However, it can be proved they refered usually to a well-built and consistent theory : that of epigenesis. In return, this later accounted for the commonly held ideas about the role of monsters as objects in divinatory practices and about their function in the cosmic order.
