Cet article dresse l'inventaire des manuels d'histoire des religions mis en circulation en France au XIXe siècle. On compte deux périodes distinctes dans cette production : 1800-1845 et 1880-1900. Aucun manuel n'est publié entre 1845 et 1880. Ces ouvrages ont été relégués par les historiens aux oubliettes de l'histoire des sciences des religions. L'objectif est d'expliquer les raisons qui ont conduit ces derniers à négliger l'apport potentiel de certains manuels au développement de l'étude des religions en France. Les livres de la première période ne satisfont pas aux critères de rigueur scientifique adoptés par les historiens du XXe siècle. De plus, la maigre production des savants français du XIXe siècle a contribué à retrancher les manuels de la trame de l'histoire des sciences des religions. Source : Éditeur (via Persée) |

The handbooks of world religions in 19th-century France This article draws up the inventory of handbooks of World religions published in France during the nineteenth century. There were two distinct periods of production : 1800-1845 and 1880-1900. No handbooks were published between 1845 and 1880. Surprisingly, the books were disregarded by historians of the Sciences of Religions (Religions-wissenschaft). Our objective is to explain the reasons that led them to overlook the potential contribution of some handbooks in the development of the scientific study of religions in France. Presumably, the methods used by the authors of the handbooks of the first period of production didn't satisfy the criteria of scientific rigour adopted by the historians of the twentieth century. Also, the poor production of nineteenth century French scholars contributed to the neglect of the handbooks from the framework of the history of Science of Religion. Source : Éditeur (via Persée) |
