Adverbial constituents, when placed at the beginning of sentences, are able to assume functions that they cannot easily perform when they are at the end of sentences. The way they function inside sentences supports this claim and suggests, as we show in the first part of the paper, that they illustrate a particular subtype of topics. This idea is confirmed by Ramsay (1984) and Ford & Thompson (1986) whose analyses are reviewed and discussed in the second part.
