Ce que l'on sait : l'article, innovation romane, provient de l'adjectif démonstratif latin ille. Son extension a été différente dans les langues néolatines : de presque générale (en français) à réduite (en roumain et en romanche) dans les syntagmes prépositionnels.Ce qu'on voudrait savoir :Comment s'explique cette différence d'extension dans les langues romanes ?Pourquoi la présence d'un déterminant a-t-elle été dès le début un contexte favorable pour l'emploi de l'article dans la Romania ?Comment s'explique l'apparition de l'article ‘démonstratif' ou ‘adjectival' en roumain ?Y a-t-il un rapport causal entre les deux phénomènes ?L'article essaie de répondre à ces problèmes en soulignant l'importance de la recherche de l'expressivité, surtout dans la langue orale. What we know: the definite article is a Romance development which derives from the Latin demonstrative adjective ille. The extent to which it is used varies in the different Romance languages: it ranges from a virtually generalized use (in French) to a limited one (Romanian, Romontsch) in the prepositional phrases.What we want to know:How can we explain the different extent to which the article is being used in the various Romance languages?Why has the presence of a modifier from the start created a favourable context for the use of the article in Romance-speaking areas?How can we explain the appearance of the ‘demonstrative' or ‘adjectival' article in Romanian?Is there a causal link between b) and c)?This article is an attempt to answer these questions by emphasizing the importance of the search for expressivity, especially in spoken language.
