Résumé anglais The French word sinon has five major types of use, which can be termed as follows: exception, restriction, disjunction, negative hypothesis and digression. The aim of this study is to elucidate the interpretive process of these uses, taking into account syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features. After identifying the characteristics of each use, we show that the versatility of sinon is due to its syntactic behavior, to the meanings of its constituent morphemes si and non, to the scope of the negation expressed by non, and to pragmatic functions such as focalization and argumentative or informational salience. This paper presents a corpus-based study of spoken French as well as of written data found in novels of the second half of the twentieth century.
