Le lien actuel entre soin et peine doit nous conduire à nous interroger sur l'origine et le but assigné à la peine au fil de son histoire. Cet article est une introduction à la thématique du colloque « Soigner ou punir », organisé par l'Aspsta (Association des services publics de soins en toxicomanie et en alcoologie) les 20 et 21 octobre 2005, à Limoges, France. Se voulant courte et concise, elle survole l'histoire de la peine de l'Antiquité à nos jours, mettant l'accent sur l'évolution de ses objectifs et son lien avec le médical et le psychosociologique. The present link between care and incarceration should focus our attention on the origin and aims of prison sentencing throughout its history. This article is based on the introduction to a conference titled “To care or to punish”, organised by the Aspsta (Association of the public services caring for drugs & alcohol abusers) on 21-22 October 2006 at Limoges, France. Short and concise, this introduction gives an overview of the history of prison sentencing, from Ancient Greece to the present day, looking especially at the evolution of the objectives of prison sentencing and its relationship with the medical and psycho-sociological fields.
