Au cours des années 1960, s'opère une rupture majeure dans la politique culturelle du Parti communiste français. À travers le cas de la création du Théâtre 71, en 1971, à Malakoff, mairie communiste depuis 1925, l'article montre comment ces évolutions, pensées en lien avec des préoccupations héritées de l'entre-deux-guerres, s'incarnent dans les pratiques municipales. La collaboration avec Guy Kayat, homme de théâtre militant à la tête du lieu, constitue un véritable apprentissage pour la municipalité. Les difficultés rencontrées par les élus communistes témoignent de l'ampleur des bouleversements opérés, au tournant des années 1960-1970, au sein du modèle de banlieue rouge dont le tissu urbain et social se voient profondément modifiés. The Birth of Theatre in Paris' Red Belt and the Paradox of Municipal Communism A major faultline appeared in the cultural policy of the French Communist Party during the 1960s. Analyzing the creation of the Théâtre 71 in 1971 in Malakoff, a Communist municipality since 1925, this article examines how the evolution in cultural policies, considered in the context of various interwar concerns, was embodied in a number of municipal practices. The town's collaboration with Guy Kayat, the theatrical activist at the head of the new venue, constituted a valuable learning experience. The difficulties faced by local Communist officials attest to the vast scope of the changes unfolding during the 1960s and 1970s within the Red Belt suburbs, whose urban and social fabric was consequently deeply altered.
