| Résumé |
Dans l'historiographie récente sur la diplomatie culturelle, on assiste à une profusion de concepts pour rendre compte des dispositifs de projection nationale et de contacts culturels. Plus particulièrement, ceux de diplomatie culturelle et la diplomatie publique sont employés sans qu'il soit toujours aisé de voir ce qui les rapproche et ce qui les éloigne. Cette contribution historicise ces notions qui connaissent une histoire parallèle débutant avec les impérialismes de la fin du XIXe siècle. Elles ne sont toutefois pas le monopole des grandes puissances. En comparant les traditions historiographiques anglo-saxonnes et francophones, on s'aperçoit que les écoles historiques ont été peu enclines à s'emprunter réciproquement les concepts de diplomatie culturelle et diplomatie publique. Cultural Diplomacy and Public Diplomacy: A Parallel History?
In the recent historiography of cultural diplomacy, there has been a profusion of concepts to decipher how national projections abroad and cultural contacts work. In particular, it is often difficult to ascertain what takes the concepts of cultural diplomacy and public diplomacy closer or brings them apart. This article historicizes the aforementioned concepts which have a parallel history and which took off during the age of imperialisms in the late nineteenth century. However, they were not exercised solely by great powers. By comparing Anglophone and Francophone historiographic traditions, it can be emphasized that both historical schools have been reluctant to borrow from one another the concepts of cultural diplomacy and public diplomacy.
