The virulent diatribe that saw Thomas Mann oppose Theodor Lessing in 1910 is an illustration of the weight of a longstanding heritage of prejudices rife in that period, attested by the paradox of an avowed philosemitism itself, even if it was also discredited by the very violence of its proclamation. It was only a moment, yet significant in the years prior to the First World War and of the complex relations of a cultivated German with Jews of his time period; it was a sign of the threats that weighed on the Judeo-German symbiosis, the traces of which can be read in the writer's development, before he succeeded in rising to a generous and militant humanism.
