Cette contribution explique la signification et la fonction de concepts tels que « décadence » et « dilettantisme » dans le contexte des Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen (Considérations d'un apolitique), texte que Thomas Mann écrivit pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Dans ce cadre, l'influence de Paul Bourget et d'Hermann Bahr est mise en évidence. Considérant que les Betrachtungen représentent une fresque culturelle aux intentions polémiques, la description de ce que Thomas Mann entend par art, est strictement liée à ce qu'il entend par critique – à savoir la critique exercée par l'artiste, et en particulier par l'artiste Thomas Mann au début du xxe siècle. Dans cette perspective, les Betrachtungen représentent à la fois le résultat de certaines postures culturelles et artistiques que Mann cultiva les années précédentes, et le laboratoire où de nouvelles attitudes comme l'émancipation et l'engagement se préparent. Nous soutenons que la critique de la modernité et de la civilisation occidentale, qui constitue le message central des Betrachtungen, fournit à l'artiste des arguments pour dépasser la décadence et les tendances au déclin culturel qu'il avait dénoncées auparavant. The paper explains the meaning and function of concepts like “décadence” and “dilettantism” in the context of Thomas Mann's Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen. In this frame the influence of the French critic Paul Bourget and of the Viennese essayist Hermann Bahr are highlighted. With reference to the fact that the Betrachtungen account for a cultural fresco with polemical intention, the illustration of what Thomas Mann understands for art is closely connected to how critique is understood and exerted by an artist – by the artist Thomas Mann at the beginning of the 20th century. Read in this perspective, the Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen represent both the upshot of Mann's artistic and critical attitude of the previous time and the workshop for a new attitude based on emancipation and engagement. The thesis to argue is that criticism expressed against the modernity and the western civilization, that constitutes the critical core of Mann's war essay, supplies the artist with intellectual and faith resources for overcoming the decadence and the common tendencies to cultural downfall.
