En 1955, fort du succès des cités radieuses de Marseille et de Nantes-Rezé, Le
Corbusier accepte l'invitation de Berlin à participer à la reconstruction du Hansaviertel, sous la forme d'une contribution à l'exposition internationale de Berlin,
l'Interbau 1957. Pour l'architecte, cette collaboration ne peut se concrétiser que par
la réalisation d'une «unité d'habitation de grandeur conforme», un concept
orignal et hors-norme qui entre en total contradiction avec la réglementation en
vigueur à Berlin. S'ouvrent dès lors deux années de querelle entre les autorités
berlinoises avant tout intéressées par le prestige de l'architecte et Le Corbusier,
n'entendant céder sur aucun point. L'unité d'habitation peut ainsi se lire comme le
témoin architectural du rendez-vous manqué entre un des architectes essentiels du

Le Corbusier
In 1955, following the success of his two «cités radieuses» in Marseille and Nantes-Rezé, Le Corbusier accepted Berlin's invitation to participate in the reconstruction
of the Hansaviertel, contributing to the Berlin International Building Exhibition,
Interbau 1957. For the architect, this collaboration could only be realized through
the construction of an «unité d'habitation de grandeur conforme», an original
and exceptional concept that came in complete contradiction to the livings standards prevalent in Berlin at the time. Thus began two years of disputes between
the Berlin authorities, who were particularly interested in the architect's prestige,
and Le Corbusier who did not intend to yield to the authorities on any front. As a
consequence this building may be considered the architectural testimony of the
missed rendezvous of one of the most significant architects of the 20th century
