The development of Social Housing in the north-east periphery of Madrid: break up
of urban space and social division (1923-1931 )
In the context of 1920's urban growth, groups of houses are being built in the periphery of large cities, amongst which Madrid, in the framework of the law on social housing. This paper studies their insertion, locally, in the north-east sector of Madrid, around the Prosperidad neighbourhood. This analysis shows that the new housing leads not only to the spatial and morphological break up of the suburb, but also to the segmentation of the real estate market into two different chains, split from conception to occupation, which coexist in the same urban space. The traditional chain of production and access to housing is relegated to a marginal sector, corresponding to the less solvent demand. By so modifying local economy and society, the development of social housing hinders social cohesion which so far characterised the neighbourhood. Source : Éditeur (via Cairn.info) |
