Au travers de l'analyse des politiques de logement des travailleurs entreprises par
les Britanniques à Bombay entre 1898 et 1926, cet article cherche à appréhender la
fabrique de l'espace colonial comme le produit de l'interaction de l'État colonial et
de ses administrés. Il interroge un des régimes de domination des ouvriers, celui
qui les relie aux autorités coloniales, et vise à donner aux travailleurs un rôle actif
dans le façonnement de leur habitat qui leur est souvent dénié. L'analyse souligne
le décalage qui existe entre le discours, hygiéniste puis social, des autorités coloniales
et leurs réalisations effectives qui souscrivent essentiellement à des soucis
d'économie. Par un éventail de pratiques quotidiennes mais aussi d'actions collectives
les travailleurs parviennent néanmoins à façonner ces espaces et, dans une
certaine mesure, à faire valoir auprès des autorités leurs conceptions en matière de

The Making of Working Class Housing in Bombay, Achievements of the Colonial
State and Occupants' Practices (1898-1926)
This paper seeks to comprehend the creation of colonial spaces as the product of the interaction between the colonial state and its subjects. The analysis for the present article is based on the housing policies for the working classes implemented by the British in Bombay City between 1898 and 1926. It questions the system of domination which bound the working classes to the colonial authorities and then aims to accord the working classes with a greater role in the shaping of their habitat, a point of view which is often denied them. This analysis emphasizes the gap between the hygienist then social discourse of the colonial authorities and their actual achievements which subscribe mainly to financial concerns. Through a range of everyday practices as well as collective actions, the workers were nevertheless able to shape those spaces and, to a certain extent, impress their ideas about housing upon the authorities.
