La diplomatie du Saint-Siège reste un objet mal identifié. Au service d'une entité internationale souveraine mais religieuse, elle est d'abord une diplomatie ecclésiale qui ne s'engage dans les affaires temporelles internationales qu'au nom du « bien commun », en défendant des principes tels que le refus de la guerre ou la défense des droits humains. Tout en suivant cette ligne directrice, la diplomatie de François tente, avec un élan renouvelé, d'endiguer les dérives de la mondialisation, de faire progresser le dialogue avec l'orthodoxie ou l'islam et de contribuer à la paix. Holy See diplomacy has always been difficult to identify. At the service of an international entity that is sovereign but religious, it is first of whole an ecclesiastic diplomacy which tackles temporal international affairs only in the name of the “common good”, by defending principles such as the rejection of war or the defence of human rights. Sticking to the guiding line, Pope Francis'diplomacy tries with a renewed impetus to curb the excesses of globalization, to advance the dialogue with Orthodoxy and Islam, and to promote peace.
