Une série de scandales depuis les années 1970, soulignant les liens ambigus de certains prélats avec des organisations de type mafieux, a poussé les papes Benoît XVI puis François à engager de profondes réformes qui commencent seulement à porter leurs fruits. Set up empirically after the fall of the Papal States, the Vatican's financial system has never been organized very rationally. Since the 1970s, several scandals have underscored the ambivalent links established by some prelates with mafia-style organizations and pushed Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis to pursue far-reaching reforms which are only beginning to bear their fruits.
