La conception médiévale de musica mundana et de musica humana, selon laquelle l'univers et l'homme sont construits musicalement, a connu une seconde fortune au temps des Lumières. Ce paradigme musical fut en grande partie abandonné durant le xviie siècle sous l'influence cartésienne. Cependant, les idées développées par certains penseurs de la philosophie naturelle britannique montrent que plusieurs aspects de la tradition de l'harmonia mundi ont été absorbés, en particulier la théorie selon laquelle l'univers est rempli d'un éther ou d'un esprit vibratoire qui sert de connexion entre le corps et l'âme. Cosmic vibrationsEchoes of universal harmony at the time of the British EnlightenmentThis paper argues that the medieval conception of musica mundana and musica humana, the idea that the universe and man are musically constructed, had an afterlife in the Enlightenment. The musical paradigm essentially dropped out of use in the seventeenth century, and was replaced by versions of Cartesian mechanism. However, by focusing on the ideas of certain British natural philosophers I show how they absorbed aspects of the harmonia mundi tradition, especially the theory that the universe is filled with a vibrating ether or spirit that also serves as the connection between body and soul.
